Pirates!

Don't let the title fool you, this was actually a great book.  I won't lie, I often judge books by their cover, contradictory to the old adage "don't judge a book by its cover" or in this case by the title.  I thought the title was kind of lame, it didn't hook me right away.  Despite this, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt.  My conclusion: this novel was amazing!

I could not put this one down.  It was an adventurous tale of two young women in the 18th Century.  Nancy is the daughter of a British Plantation Owner trapped by a horrible arranged marriage. Minerva is her sister and a slave on the plantation.  They run away from their troubles to a life of piracy.  Celia Rees made this into such a believable masterpiece that I didn't even find it cheesy.  It is full of suspense, romance and thrills.  It's like taking a peak into the past with vivid descriptions of their clothing, the riches, and colorful scenery.

Rees chose two strong, empowered women who break the bounds of gender, race, and social position to follow their own path.  I was sucked into their world, each time I came out of the book as if I just sailed the seven seas.

  1. I like how you are honest in your first paragraph. It gives the reader a sense of "this is a real person writing." Sometimes blogs can look almost like a robot wrote them, with "blah blah blah this book was good." But you talk about how you were skeptical at first. Therefore, I would consider reading this novel because I too am skeptical of the title, but would use your advice and probably advance on and read it. Your about me is good, explaining your love for books

  2. Your about me really sets the tone for the blog - letting the readers know exactly what you, and this blog, are about. Your first post is really informative and the novel sounds really interesting. I really like the format of this blog, I think that it goes really well with your topic. Hope to find some more good books on here in the future!

  3. I love your blog! I have to say that I really enjoy reading about books that people have already read. I like how you post the book cover and a description with what you thought about the book as well. It's really a comfort to listen to someone's own experiences reading a book before you get half way through it yourself and then realize your unbelievably bored! Awesome!
